As you already figured, the planet where the action unfolds is far from hospitable. To protect the colonists, there is a special dome over their base that is meant to fend off waves of local fauna that keeps attacking the camp non-stop. The ecology is highly aggressive, and everything from the smallest plants to the biggest animals wants to kill you. As the main character, your task is to ensure the colony expands and thrives, and that as many of its dwellers as possible remain alive in this dangerous place. The genre of Dome Keeper can be described as survival simulator plus side-view action platformer. The whole process is split into phases of defense and development. During the defense phase, you have to fight various alien monsters trying to break through the dome and kill everyone inside. Between these attacks, you will be digging mines searching for precious elements and useful resources. They will allow you to set up production of various goods and improvements to make your colony better-protected and more functional.

For instance, you can increase the performance of the drilling equipment which will allow you to mine more ore and other materials. Or you can modernize the weapons used to fight off the aggressive fauna lurking around – that will increase your chances of surviving when venturing out or during the assaults of the base. In much the same way, spending up the jetpack that carries you through these grim landscapes will diminish the possibility of you being chased and torn apart by local predators.
